Pulverizing of Cacao with
an Air Cooled Grinding System
Powders for instant
chocolate drinks can be produced from pre-crushed cacao
press cake using an Universal mill type PX 315. The
cacao press cake usually has a fat content of approx. 12
percent and gets pre-crushed into pieces having a size
of approx. 12 mm and smaller (1/2 inch). The material is
very heat sensitive and thus for pulverizing a system
using chilled air is needed. The system can produce a
cacao powder with a particle size 90 percent minus 74 µm
(200 mesh). The throughput capacity is approx. 200 kg/h.
Method of Operation
Material is metered into the Universal mill by
means of a vibratory feeder. Process air, going
into the mill and used for air conveying of the
material, is chilled in a heat exchanger using
cold water. Size reduction of the material takes
place inside the grinding chamber by impact of
the material against the pins of a rotating and
a stationary pin disc.
Pulverized material is discharged into a pick-up
pan and air conveyed into a cyclone separator.
Material and air are separated in the cyclone.
Fine powder is discharged through a rotary
airlock installed at the outlet of the cyclone.
The air from the cyclone separator passes
through a filter. Super fine material is
discharged through the rotary airlock underneath
the filter. The whole system is operated under
negative pressure created by a blower; this
ensures a clean operation of the system. Air is
circulated, cooled in the heat exchanger and
then used in the process again. |
